Celebrates

Back in March, we celebrated International Women’s Day. It has been described as being the focal point in the movement for women’s rights. The theme for 2019 was ‘Think equal, build smart, Innovate for change.’ The focus of the theme is on innovative ways in which to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services.

We decided to produce a four-part podcast focusing on the topics:

  • Women in Tech
  • Role Models
  • #BalanceForBetter
  • What Empowers You

Find out more about the podcasts here:

In the first of the four podcasted we invited three members from the Ingram Micro Marketing Team to come together and discuss from their point of view and their experiences as women in the technology sector.

Armelle, Liz and Vaish work through their thoughts on equality, work life balance and teaching the younger generations on how they have an impact on the future of the working environment in technology.

“I think this goes more in depth, it’s not just the technology sector… I suppose its across the board in all sectors. Is there really equality in the work place.” “As a working mum myself and more so as a single mum, working in the technology sector for the past seven years from the birth of my children, the industry has been very supportive and very flexible with allowing me to have a good balance and has enabled me to accommodate the children as well as work full time.”

The second podcast was hosted by Kelly, Lauren, Armelle and Vaish. The team discussed their Role Models and what they mean to them.

The four spoke openly about their role models growing up and how they are becoming role models for their children and family.

The team ran through their opinions on who are role models and what qualities they possess.

“A role model doesn’t just have to exhibit perfect behaviour, but a role model is someone you learn from.”

“Everyone’s winging it, no one is taught how to live life, no ones told how to juggle being a mum or work full time.”

This year’s International Women’s Day campaign is themed around #BalanceForBetter. Their aim is to build a gender-balanced world. “Balance is not a women’s issue, it’s a business issue.

The race is on for the gender-balanced boardroom, a gender-balanced government, gender-balanced media coverage, a gender-balance of employees, more gender-balance in wealth, gender-balanced sports coverage …

“Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive.”

The third podcast focuses on this year’s theme. The Armelle and Lauren are joined by Scott Murphey to discuss balancing genders, biases and the pay gap. “Yes, we want to raise women up, but we want to raise men up at the same time and really push that equality, whether it stands for race, age, sexism, orientation. A lot of the stigma around International Women’s Day, it isn’t just about women its about promoting that balance between equality.”

The fourth and final podcast is all about What Empowers You. We are joined again by Armelle, Lauren and Scott to discuss what has empowered them to go after what they really want.

“For me it’s knowledge and confidence, having the knowledge and experience empowers me and gives me the confidence.”
